Hout Bay resident, Geoff ten Oever and convener of the Mexican stall at the Community Chest Carnival jointly received the Community Chest Carnival Memorial Award this past Saturday, 29 May 2010 at the Carnival’s Thank You function held at the Chinese Sports Association Club in Observatory together with Betsi De Bruyn from the Holland stall. The Community Chest Carnival held at Maynardville Park, Wynberg is one of Cape Town’s iconic family events, and opened its gates for the 59th consecutive time February this year. The Carnival is made possible by the efforts of some 7 000 volunteers who donate their time and skills to ensure that each year’s event is better than the preceding one. The Carnival Thank You function is held in honour of the volunteers and each year awards are handed out to commendable volunteers and this year was no exception. Geoff ten Oever, who was elated upon receiving his award and joked that he was surprised to share the award with Holland this year. Geoff admitted: “that he always keeps a close eye on Holland and wishes that the Mexican stall could do half as well as them, after all they have the whole Dutch embassy and clubs behind them. I just have my buddies, so all in all I think we do pretty well under the circumstances. It’s almost like David & Goliath story”. The Community Chest Carnival Memorial Award established in June 2007, and honours all the volunteers at Carnival who have passed on and left a legacy for us to cherish and build on. It is presented to a volunteer or group of volunteers managing a stall at Carnival who through their efforts at Carnival and other areas assist the Community Chest achieve its objectives of adding value to the ambience at Carnival, making a financial contribution, promoting the Community Chest’s work outside of the Carnival circle, subscribing to the shared values of the Community Chest and encourage volunteerism to help grow the volunteer pool.
